A thick layer of snow has already transformed Mount Washington’s summit, indicating the impending arrival of winter season.

Standing atop the highest point in New England, the Mount Washington Observatory released an impressive photograph showing snow up to several feet deep in some places.

The Observatory said that earlier today, the peak broke through the clouds to reveal an amazing sight, encircled by soaring clouds and covered in a blanket of fresh, powdery snow that fell during the most recent winter storm, totalling 17.6 inches.

In another photo, the Observatory tower was captured in the middle of an amazing natural phenomenon formed by clouds when sunlight interacts with small droplets of water.

Snowfall is expected to persist through Tuesday night, accompanied by biting wind chills plunging to 25 degrees below zero by late Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Wednesday morning might bring the season’s first snowfall along the Massachusetts coast. While not a significant storm, Cape Ann and the coastal areas of Plymouth County should expect a dusting to an inch of snow.
